Indoor Magic: Sparking Joy on Winter Days

During the cold winter months, weather advisories frequently alert us to freezing temperatures, snowstorms, and icy conditions that encourage us to stay indoors for safety reasons. Unfortunately, for young children, being stuck inside for extended periods can have both physical and mental effects. Limited outdoor play reduces their opportunities for essential physical activity and may lead to restlessness and irritability. To counter this, parents and educators should seek creative and engaging ways to keep children active indoors, fostering both physical and mental stimulation during the colder months. There are many activities that can support children’s physical and mental health while keeping them entertained indoors, all in the comfort of your own home and without breaking the bank.

Playing board games together can be a fantastic way to foster social skills, enhance problem-solving abilities, and have fun as a family. Games that require strategies, like checkers or card games, encourage critical thinking, while cooperative games, like Pictionary or Charades, promote collaboration and communication.

Bringing the outdoors inside can also be a creative and engaging option. For example, filling buckets with snow (if accessible) and letting children explore its texture can provide a unique sensory experience. You can enhance this by adding food colouring to the snow, allowing children to mix and create colourful patterns as they play. This hands-on activity keeps children connected to nature, even while indoors.

Cooking and baking together is another rewarding option. Simple recipes like homemade pizzas, cookies, or DIY hot chocolate not only involve children in practical life skills—like measuring and following instructions—but also promote healthy eating when nutritious ingredients are included.

Art projects can also unlock creativity. Setting up a mini art station with coloured paper, markers, and recycled materials allows children to express themselves and create winter-themed masterpieces.

Finally, nothing lifts spirits quite like music! A dance party boosts both mental and physical well-being. Dancing enhances coordination and motor skills while providing a fun way to exercise, helping children release energy, grow healthy, and develop strong muscles. It also allows for creative expression, improving mood and reducing stress.

Finding innovative ways to keep children active indoors during winter will result in happier, healthier children ready to embrace the joys of this season!

Testimonials

  • There truly aren’t enough words to express how grateful our family is for this daycare. From the very first day, the educators and staff have loved and cared for my children as if they were their own. As parents, there is no greater comfort than knowing your kids are safe, happy, and genuinely cared for when you’re away at work and that’s exactly what they gave us every single day. Because of you, my children didn’t just attend daycare they gained an extended family. The warmth, patience, kindness, and dedication you show is something very special and rare. Taking them out has honestly been one of the saddest decisions for us, not just for the kids but for me as well. I became attached to all of you too. I truly wish every daycare had educators like you all, so no parent would ever have to feel worried when dropping off their child in the morning. Thank you to all the incredible educators and the amazing director who have been part of our journey. We will never forget the love and support you’ve given our family. You will always hold a special place in our hearts.

  • My son started daycare at 1 year of age, spending the first year of his life at home during the lockdown.  It wasn’t easy as many other kids, however, staffs at Dawes Road CEL were so helpful and caring he eventually got it easy within the first 3 weeks. The staff members were very supportive and kept me updated with his progress. Especially the himama app helped me be informed of all his activities throughout the day.

I would like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to the staff and management of the center for taking care of my son.

  • The last two and a half years have been wonderful for Asharib. I still remember the 1st day when I dropped him at daycare and how scared we both were. But he had learned so much in the past 2 years & I am glad that I decided to send him to Lori Gardens. Special thanks to all of Asharib’s teachers for taking such good care of him teaching him manners and always trying to make his day fun & exciting. Thank you so much for everything!
